Some islands stay in your memory because of their beaches. Others, at just the right moment, reveal that their beauty does not end where the coastline begins. Although Lefkada unquestionably boasts some of the finest beaches in the Ionian Sea, it has much more to offer visitors and Dimosari is one of its most remarkable attractions.
Just a few minutes from cosmopolitan Nydri, a shaded path leads you to an entirely different side of the Ionian landscape, filled with plane trees, rushing water and a tiny natural pool with an emerald hue. From the parking area, the walk to the main waterfall is short, taking approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Access is relatively easy, although some slippery sections of the trail require sturdy, closed-toe footwear and a degree of caution.
The trail itself is a genuine delight, particularly during the summer months, when the dense foliage of the plane trees casts generous shade, creating a welcome haven of coolness amid the intense summer heat. As visitors make their way along the path, they first encounter a series of smaller water formations, gradually preparing them for what lies ahead.
Before long, the gorge narrows, the sound of rushing water grows louder and the main waterfall is revealed in all its splendour. Its clear, crystalline water cascades forcefully into a natural turquoise pool, creating a setting that feels more like a tropical inland retreat than the familiar landscape of an Ionian island.
A Dip for the Brave
On hot summer days, the natural pool formed at the foot of the waterfall provides a precious escape from the heat. Its waters, however, remain unexpectedly cold. The first plunge may take your breath away, but after a few moments it becomes an extraordinarily refreshing experience.
For those who cannot quite brave the icy-clear water, no heroics are required to enjoy the setting. Simply find a spot on one of the rocks, listen to the sounds of the landscape and watch the light dance playfully across the surface of the water. Even without taking a dip, the surroundings offer a profound sense of renewal and a deeper connection with nature.
The site is open throughout the year and admission is free. Along with your swimsuit, it is advisable to bring drinking water, non-slip footwear and a small towel. Bear in mind that flip-flops are not suitable for the slippery sections of the trail.
How to Get to Dimosari
Shortly before reaching the centre of Nydri, take the ring road and then follow the signs for the waterfalls. After approximately three kilometres, you will arrive at the area where you can park your car or bicycle. From there, the short walking section of the route begins.
Nydri may have become famous as a cosmopolitan resort, closely associated with the small islands lying just offshore and the history of Skorpios, but Dimosari reveals something more fundamental about Lefkada: its remarkable ability to transform itself.
A visit is undoubtedly well worth your time.
