In the Ionian Islands, music is far more than entertainment; it is a living part of local identity, memory, and tradition. From one generation to the next, bands, choirs, and philharmonic societies have shaped the cultural character of these islands, accompanying both moments of joy and moments of deep devotion. Especially during the Holy Week, music takes on a profound and symbolic role, becoming the voice of faith, emotion, and collective experience.
In Lefkada, the presence of the Philharmonic is inseparable from the Easter celebrations. It can't be missing from the island’s sacred and festive customs. From the solemn atmosphere of Holy Thursday to the joyful spirit of Holy Saturday, the band of the Philharmonic Society of Lefkada is always present, giving rhythm and feeling to some of the most meaningful moments of Easter.
This year’s Easter program in Lefkada highlights this special bond between music and tradition:
On Holy Thursday at 20:00, the public is invited to an open rehearsal in the courtyard of the Philharmonic Society of Lefkada. It is a beautiful opportunity to witness the preparation and dedication behind the music that accompanies these sacred days.
On Holy Friday at 19:00, the Epitaph procession of the Holy Monastery of Faneromeni will take place, accompanied by the Band of the Philharmonic Society of Lefkada. Later that evening, on Holy Friday at 21:20, the Epitaph procession of the Metropolitan Church of Evangelistria of Lefkada will also be accompanied by the band, adding a moving musical dimension to one of the most emotional moments of Holy Week.
On Holy Saturday at 12:00, the Municipality of Lefkada and the Philharmonic Society of Lefkada invite everyone to take part in the local custom of throwing “To Kommati”, which will be distributed in the town’s Central Market. The event will begin with the Mayor of Lefkada, Dr. Xenophon N. Verginis, breaking the first “Kommati” from a balcony in Marka Square, accompanied by the festive sounds of “Eothino” performed by the Philharmonic band. The band will then continue its procession toward Agios Minas and afterwards through the Central Market.
