Greek photographer Eugenia Aravantinou presents Random Nautica, a photography exhibition exploring memory, identity and the shifting landscapes of the human psyche.
Moving away from direct portraiture, Aravantinou turns her camera towards a more symbolic and almost mythological visual world. Themes that have long occupied her practice, particularly identity and the act of looking, are transformed into poetic images that invite viewers to embark on an inward journey.
In Random Nautica, photography becomes a means of navigating personal history and emotional memory. Like an experienced navigator returning to familiar waters, Aravantinou revisits her roots while mapping the complex territory of human experience. The resulting images suggest movement, transformation and discovery, creating a visual dialogue between the visible world and the private landscapes we carry within us.
A defining aspect of the series is the artist’s photographic process. Rather than constructing or substantially altering the images on a computer, Aravantinou creates them at the moment of capture. Through this approach, she highlights photography’s ability to transform reality while preserving the immediacy of the original encounter. Each photograph becomes both an observation and an interpretation—a way for the artist to share her distinctive vision with the viewer.
About the Artist
Eugenia Aravantinou was born in Patras, Greece. Since 2014, she has lived and worked in Palairos. Her work has been presented in group exhibitions since 1995, including exhibitions at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, the Athens School of Fine Arts and other cultural and art venues. Her artistic practice focuses primarily on questions of identity and human interaction. According to her official biography, she has received distinctions from the Hellenic Transplant Organization, Roche Hellas and the University Hospital of Patras. In recent years, Aravantinou has also organised workshops combining creative photography with self-awareness, encouraging participants to use image-making as a means of personal exploration and expression.
