AGONY SACRED AT THE LOOM OF EVA PALMER SIKELIANOU
Thursday, September 4, 2025 – Performance
After its successful premiere at the Sikelianos Garden Theatre in 2023, the performance-study exploring the life and work of Eva Palmer Sikelianou returns to Lefkada. The production, which has received outstanding reviews and moving responses in both Greece and Germany, across theaters and archaeological sites, will be presented for a single performance at the Castle of Agia Mavra.
Who was Eva Palmer Sikelianou, really? The woman who organized the Delphic Festivals, learned the art of weaving, and immersed herself in Byzantine music? Or the one who participated in Sapphic circles in Paris, engaged in anti-fascist and anti-capitalist activism, and spent her life in the shadow of the poet?
A wealthy white American
Member of a Sapphic movement
Anti-capitalist, decolonialist
She weaves. Studies Byzantine music.
Organizes and directs the Delphic Festivals.
Resists industrialization and fascism—and suffers defeat.
A loom that weaves time itself.
This performance blends elements of ritual theater to explore the liberating power that frees one from the oppression of Western mechanized life. Interweaving the ideals that inspired her work with a sharp critique of the controversial aspects of her life, the show offers a study of the woman who bridged the ancient world with the modern and revived classical drama.
