Afteli is tucked away in a small granite cove, where the shrub-covered slopes almost brush against the pebbled shore. The renowned German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who studied the Odyssey in depth, placed here the harbour where Telemachus landed on his return from Pylos, escaping the suitors’ ambush at Asteris. From Afteli, Telemachus is said to have made his way to the stables of the faithful swineherd Eumaeus, near the fabled Pig’s Cave, which Dörpfeld identified with Homer’s pigsty, before reuniting with his father, Odysseus.
Despite its modest size and tranquil character, Afteli has a beach bar offering basic comforts: sun loungers, umbrellas, refreshing drinks, and food for those who wish to linger. Access, however, requires some care—the road is narrow, with sharp turns and steep inclines—but the reward at the end is priceless. Keep in mind that parking spaces are limited, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning.
Afteli does not promise glamorous thrills; instead, it offers something far rarer: the feeling that you’ve discovered your own hidden treasure, far from the pull of mass tourism.
