One such lesser-known spot is Megali Petra, a secret paradise near the village of Kalamitsi. Megali Petra—literally “Big Rock”—owes its name to the impressive clusters of large and small boulders scattered along the shore and in the sea, remnants most likely of ancient landslides. These rocks are perfect for adventurous divers and snorkelers alike, offering opportunities to explore the seabed or simply enjoy a peaceful float among natural sculpture.
How to Get to Megali Petra Beach
Your journey to Megali Petra begins in the village of Kalamitsi, following a scenic route through verdant hills. The road includes sharp turns and narrow stretches, so a bit of driving experience is recommended. This slightly challenging access, however, is part of what preserves the beach’s untouched, pristine beauty.
Along this same route, you'll also find Kavalikefta and Avali, the two other beaches of Kalamitsi that are well worth a visit. Once you park (note: parking is limited), a short and easy footpath leads you to the beach.
Useful Tips Before Visiting Megali Petra
While the beach remains mostly wild, a few sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent—thankfully without compromising its natural character. If you need water or refreshments, the nearest beach bar is located at Kavalikefta, just next door. Kavalikefta, along with Avali and the smaller nearby beaches of Gaidaros and Theotokos, complete Kalamitsi’s collection of hidden coastal gems.
Keep in mind:
- The sea at Megali Petra deepens quickly, so extra caution is needed—especially when the western coast of Lefkada gets choppy, as it often does.
- The southern end of the beach is favored by naturists seeking peace and privacy.
- While this is not a beach overrun by crowds, it's still best to arrive early in the day—especially between mid-July and mid-August—since parking spots are few and the beach can fill up fast.
